A NEW TYPE HIGH-TEMPERATURE DRYING KILN FOR LUMBER
Gu Lianbai and Jin XianzhangA new type high-temperature drying kiln for lumber has been designed in 1977. The Characteristics of this kiln are that side wall are tilted along the length and a fan and radiators are put at the back end of the kiln;its drying medium may be either superheated vapour or high-temperature wet air. The construction of the kiln is simple and economical.One of this kind of kiln was built at Zhongshan Furniture Factory in Nanjing. The capacity of this kiln is 8.5 m3 and its annual output is 2100 m3 of softwood lumber in 2.2 cm thickness. It is found that the velocity of circulation of drying medium through load is over 2 m/s;as compared with 1~2 rn/s in the conventional kilns in our country. The velocity of medium circulation through load is uniform along the height of the load but is not so uniform along the length. The drying period for the 2.2 cm-thick Pinus massoniana Lamb;lumber with an initial moisture content of 39.1; and a final moisture content of 3.7; is only 14 hours;whearas in the conventional kiln in our country it takes over two days. Final moisture contents of samples put in different parts of the load are uniform though their initial moisture contents may vary greatly. The drying quality is good.On the whole;this kiln is suitable for small and medium lumber mills and if built with double tracks;it will be applicable to larger mills.
