Four varieties of rice were cultured in water culture. The treatment was conducted in culture solutions containing 0—240 mg Fe~ L~ in the absence of Si and in the presence of Si as 50 mg SiO_2 L~ for 30 days. The length;fresh weight and oxidizability of rice roots were measured. The results showed that the values of length;fresh weight and oxidizability of rice roots for +Si treatment were higher than for —Si treatment. The concentration of Fe~ in culture solution of +Si treatment was 50—8o mg L~ while root’s oxidizability reached maximum and concentration of Fe~ was 40—70 mg L~ for —Si treatment. It showed that there was a significant function of Si on alleviation of Fe~ toxieity to rice roots.
